These varieties tend to absorb thin traditional stains unevenly looking messy and unfinished no. Maybe it was my oak cabinets but i have never had so much trouble getting something to look even. This is a more detailed video than my last one on how to gel stain your kitchen cabinets. While gel stain does go on thick and sit on the surface of the wood i found that you can still see and feel the natural wood grain beneath unlike paint.

Minwax preparation products are the first step to ensure your wood surfaces show their most beautiful colors and smoothest finishes. With the oak cabinets the grain was very evident post staining. Wait 3 minutes and remove the excess stain with a clean cloth wiping in the direction of the grain. Gel stain will not require you to sand the product to a raw wood finish.
Gel staining your cabinets is a long process and it can take several days to complete. Lightly scuff the clean dried existing finish with a synthetic sanding pad or 220 grit sandpaper. After applying your gel stain allow a full 24 hours to dry it only took 12 hours after the second and third coats for my cabinets. A gel stain is a great way to bring outdated or worn cabinets up to date.
Allow to dry 8 10 hours. In the darker rooms like the bathrooms in our house this worked out fine. Apply a liberal amount of stain evenly with a brush or clean cloth. To darken the color apply additional coats of minwax gel stain repeating directions for application of first coat.
