Should You Caulk Around Kitchen Cabinets

It s not necessary to caulk the seam between your kitchen cabinets and wall.

Karen s company loves to paint kitchen cabinets. Just because you can caulk doesn t always mean we should because caulking can work its way out overtime. If you do it s for esthetics purposes only the caulking isn t keeping your cabinets on the wall. The idea is to make the caulking smooth consistently even in the roundness of its cove no gaps or ridges and also to blend in seamlessly with the grain on the panels.
One of the steps that we do on about 50 of the cabinets that we paint is to caulk the seam between the door panel and trim. If you want to be really nuts about it you can use thickened primer or an automotive pinhole filler in the crack or pro grade spackle. Never once have i had a problem with caulking them after probably 50 cabinet jobs. That way it becomes part of the cabinets.

It goes down flat is forgiving with your brush strokes and cleans up rather easily when you have the appropriate solvent or thinner available. That means you can brush it straight on your kitchen cabinets to complete the look you want. Some door panels move inside the frame which may or may not hold caulking. Even slight movement in the wood will cause any caulk to push out or crack.
The caulk should either match the ceiling color wall color or the cabinets either looks fine. You will always see caulk through the topcoats because it is so much softer.
